It is well situated for visiting the chateaux of the Loire Valley and the wine regions such as Vouvray, Chinon, St Nicolas de Bourgueil. The village of Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher even has its own megalithic dolmen, troglodyte house, and an ancient chapel in the rock face.
Its construction dates from 1705 when Joseph Aubry, Marquis of Castelnau, Lord of le Plessis, Lieutenant general of the Touraine, and Mayor of Tours decide to live at le Plessis. His son Joseph Jean Aubry, President of the Finance office of Tours and Mayor was Ecuyer and Advisor to the king.
The house, which is full of history, was the home, of Eugene O'Neill (famous American playwright, Nobel prize winner, 1888-1953) who rented the chateau from May 1929 to May 1931, and spent many hours writing Mourning Becomes Electra. At the beginning of his stay he married Carlotta Monterey. Among the guests were Lillian Gish (famous American actress) and George Jean Nathan.
